더불어민주당 전남·광주통합특별시장 후보인 민형배 국회의원(광주 광산구을)이 ‘2026 여수세계섬박람회’를 5개월 앞두고 안전을 최우선으로 한 전면적인 대응책 마련을 강하게 촉구했다.

민 후보는 19일 페이스북을 통해 “여수세계섬박람회는 전남·광주통합특별시 이름으로 치러지는 첫 국제행사”라며 “365개의 섬을 품은 여수의 해양 자원을 세계에 알리는 중요한 무대인만큼, 철저한 준비와 시민 신뢰 확보가 반드시 전제돼야 한다.”고 밝혔다.

그는 특히 최근 제기된 ▲주행사장 준비 미흡 ▲간척지 임시시설 논란 ▲교통 및 편의시설 부족 ▲폐어구·폐선박 등 해양쓰레기 문제 등을 언급하며 “국제행사는 단 한 번의 방심으로도 지역 이미지와 국가 신뢰를 훼손할 수 있다”고 지적했다.

또한 “이재명 대통령이 국무회의에서 점검과 지원을 지시하고, 김민석 국무총리가 현장을 찾는 등 중앙정부 대응이 이뤄지고 있다”며 “선거와 무관하게 후보들 역시 더 높은 집중력으로 사전 점검에 나서야 한다.”고 강조했다.
민 후보는 “보여주기식 점검이 아닌 관람객의 눈높이에서 현장을 살펴야 한다.”며 “전남·광주통합특별시장 후보로서 직접 현장을 점검하고 책임 있게 보완하겠다.”고 밝혔다.

구체적 대응 방안으로는 ▲관람객 이동 동선 정비 ▲교통약자 편의시설 확충 ▲배수시설 점검 ▲그늘 막·쉼터 확대 ▲해풍 대응 인프라 구축 등을 제시했다.

아울러 여수의 해양 환경 특성을 고려해 ▲태풍·집중호우 대비 ▲섬 이동 선박 안전관리 ▲기상 악화 시 대체 수송 체계 ▲응급환자 이송 체계 구축 등 재난 대응 시스템의 선제적 구축 필요성도 강조했다.

주행사장 입지 문제에 대해서는 “2012 여수엑스포를 통해 검증된 기존 엑스포 전시관이라는 압도적인 인프라를 두고, 배수 우려가 있는 간척지에 임시시설을 조성하는 것이 적절한지 원점에서 재검토해야 한다.”고 밝혔다.

이어 “예산 낭비를 줄이고 안전을 확보할 수 있다면 기존 시설을 적극 활용하는 유연한 판단이 필요하다”고 덧붙였다.
민 후보는 “국제행사의 성패는 화려한 시설이 아니라 현장의 완벽한 안전에서 결정된다.”며 “전남·광주통합특별시의 첫 국제행사를 반드시 성공적으로 치러내겠다”고 강조했다.

“Safety Determines the Success of International Events”… Min Hyung-bae Calls for Comprehensive Inspection of Yeosu World Island Expo

Min Hyung-bae, a member of the National Assembly (Gwangju Gwangsan-eul) and a Democratic Party candidate for the integrated Jeonnam–Gwangju Special Metropolitan City, strongly urged the government to establish comprehensive safety measures ahead of the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo, now just five months away.
In a Facebook post on the 19th, Min stated, “The Yeosu World Island Expo will be the first international event held under the name of the integrated Jeonnam–Gwangju Special Metropolitan City,” adding, “As a significant platform to showcase Yeosu’s marine resources, home to 365 islands, thorough preparation and public trust must be ensured.”
He pointed out several recently raised concerns, including ▲insufficient preparation of the main venue ▲controversy over temporary facilities on reclaimed land ▲lack of transportation and convenience facilities ▲marine waste issues such as discarded fishing gear and abandoned vessels. He warned, “A single lapse in an international event can damage the region’s image and undermine national credibility.”
Min also noted that Lee Jae-myung had ordered inspections and support during a Cabinet meeting, and that Kim Min-seok had visited the site, indicating active central government involvement. He emphasized, “Regardless of the election, all candidates must engage in more focused pre-inspections.”
He stressed that inspections should not be superficial, stating, “We must examine the site from the perspective of visitors, not through showmanship,” and added, “As a candidate for the integrated special metropolitan city, I will personally inspect the site and ensure necessary improvements.”
Proposed measures include ▲improving visitor flow ▲enhancing accessibility for the transportation-disadvantaged ▲checking drainage systems ▲expanding shade and rest areas ▲strengthening infrastructure against sea winds.
Considering Yeosu’s marine environment, he further highlighted the need for preemptive disaster response systems, including ▲preparedness for typhoons and heavy rain ▲safety management for island transport vessels ▲alternative transport systems during severe weather ▲emergency patient transfer systems.
Regarding the location of the main venue, Min stated, “It is necessary to fundamentally reconsider whether it is appropriate to build temporary facilities on reclaimed land with drainage concerns, while leaving underutilized the proven infrastructure of the 2012 Yeosu Expo.” He added, “If safety can be secured and budget waste reduced, flexible use of existing facilities should be prioritized.”
Min concluded, “The success of an international event is determined not by flashy facilities, but by perfect safety on site,” emphasizing, “We will ensure the successful hosting of the first international event of the integrated Jeonnam–Gwangju Special Metropolitan City.”
