전라남도가 4·19혁명 제66주년을 맞아 민주주의를 위해 희생한 영령들의 뜻을 기리며, 그 정신의 계승을 다짐했다.
전남도는 19일 목포 달맞이공원 4·19 민주혁명 기념비를 찾아 참배하고, 민주영령의 숭고한 희생과 헌신을 기리는 추모 행사를 가졌다고 밝혔다.

이날 행사에는 김영록 전남도지사를 비롯해 조석훈 목포시장 권한대행, 4·19혁명 국가유공자와 유족, 전남도 실·국장 등 30여 명이 참석해 엄숙한 분위기 속에서 헌화와 묵념을 진행했다.

4·19혁명은 대한민국 현대사에서 독재와 부정선거에 맞선 시민 저항으로, 민주주의의 방향을 근본적으로 바꾼 역사적 분수령으로 평가된다. 특히 호남 지역에서는 광주를 시작으로 목포·여수·순천 등으로 시위가 확산되며 전국적인 민주화 물결을 이끄는 중요한 역할을 했다.
당시 고등학생과 청년들이 앞장선 항거는 단순한 시위를 넘어, 민주주의를 지키기 위한 국민 주권의 실천으로 기록된다. 이들의 희생과 용기는 오늘날 대한민국 민주주의의 근간으로 이어지고 있다.

김영록 지사는 “4·19혁명이 보여준 연대와 참여의 정신은 지금도 여전히 유효한 시대적 가치”라며 “그 정신을 바탕으로 전남·광주 통합특별시 출범을 차질 없이 준비해, 도민이 체감하는 삶의 질 향상과 지역 경쟁력 강화를 반드시 이뤄내겠다”고 강조했다.

전남도는 앞으로도 4·19혁명의 역사적 의미를 계승하고, 민주주의 가치 확산을 위한 다양한 기념사업과 교육 프로그램을 지속적으로 추진할 방침이다.

South Jeolla Province commemorated the 66th anniversary of the April 19 Revolution, honoring the sacrifices made for democracy and reaffirming its commitment to carrying forward that spirit.
On the 19th, the province visited the April 19 Democratic Revolution Memorial at Dalmaji Park in Mokpo, where it held a memorial ceremony to pay tribute to the noble sacrifices and dedication of the fallen.
The ceremony was attended by Governor Kim Young-rok, Acting Mayor of Mokpo Cho Seok-hoon, national meritorious persons of the April 19 Revolution and their bereaved families, as well as about 30 provincial officials. The event proceeded in a solemn atmosphere with wreath-laying and a moment of silence.
The April 19 Revolution is regarded as a historic turning point in modern Korean history, marking a civic uprising against dictatorship and electoral fraud that fundamentally reshaped the course of democracy. In particular, the movement spread throughout the Honam region—from Gwangju to Mokpo, Yeosu, and Suncheon—playing a pivotal role in igniting a nationwide wave of democratization.
At the time, high school students and young people stood at the forefront, and their resistance went beyond mere protest—it was a powerful expression of popular sovereignty. Their sacrifice and courage continue to form the foundation of Korea’s democracy today.
Governor Kim stated, “The spirit of solidarity and participation demonstrated by the April 19 Revolution remains a vital value even today,” adding, “Based on that spirit, we will steadily prepare for the launch of the Gwangju–Jeonnam Integrated Special City, ensuring tangible improvements in residents’ quality of life and strengthening regional competitiveness.”
South Jeolla Province also announced that it will continue to promote various commemorative projects and educational programs to preserve the historical significance of the April 19 Revolution and expand democratic values.
