더불어민주당 전남·광주통합특별시장 후보인 민형배 국회의원(광주 광산구을)이 여성 인권의 가치를 “시대가 변해도 흔들려서는 안 될 최우선 원칙”으로 규정하며, 지역 인권 현장의 지속적 역할을 강조했다.

민 후보는 24일 광주 서구 더파크림에서 열린 광주여성인권지원센터 창립 20주년 기념행사에 참석해 관계자들을 격려하고, 인권의 본질과 사회적 책무에 대한 입장을 밝혔다.

이날 행사에서 민 후보는 “세상은 빠르게 변화하고 있지만 결코 변해서는 안 될 가치가 있다.”며 “그중에서도 가장 중요한 것은 사람의 존엄과 인권”이라고 강조했다.
이어 “여성인권지원센터가 20년 동안 여성 인권의 가치를 지켜온 것은 지역사회에 매우 큰 의미를 갖는다.”며 “현장에서 헌신해 온 모든 분들께 깊이 감사드린다.”고 밝혔다.

특히 그는 “인권은 가장 가까운 곳에서 가장 약한 사람들의 편에 서는 것”이라며 “사회적 약자를 먼저 살피는 것이 인권의 출발점이자 기준”이라고 역설했다.

광주여성인권지원센터는 2005년 성매매 현장상담센터 ‘언니네’ 활동을 시작으로, 이듬해 사단법인으로 창립된 이후 20년간 지역 내 양성평등 확산과 여성 인권 보호를 위한 다양한 지원 활동을 이어오고 있다.

이번 20주년 기념행사는 그간의 성과를 돌아보고 향후 과제를 모색하는 자리로 마련됐으며, 여성 인권 증진을 위한 지역사회 연대의 중요성을 다시 한 번 확인하는 계기가 됐다.

Min Hyung-bae, a National Assembly member (Gwangsan-gu Eul, Gwangju) and a Democratic Party candidate for the Jeonnam–Gwangju Integrated Special City mayoralty, emphasized that women’s rights must remain a top priority that should never be compromised, regardless of changing times, while underscoring the continued importance of grassroots human rights efforts.
On the 24th, Min attended the 20th anniversary ceremony of the Gwangju Women’s Human Rights Support Center, held at The Parkrim in Seo-gu, Gwangju, where he encouraged staff members and shared his views on the essence of human rights and social responsibility.
During the event, Min stated, “The world is changing rapidly, but there are values that must never change,” adding, “Among them, the most important is human dignity and human rights.” He continued, “It is highly meaningful for the local community that the Women’s Human Rights Support Center has upheld these values for the past 20 years,” and expressed deep gratitude to those who have devoted themselves to the cause on the front lines.
He further defined human rights as “standing with the most vulnerable people in the closest places,” stressing that “prioritizing the socially disadvantaged is both the starting point and the standard of human rights.”
The Gwangju Women’s Human Rights Support Center began in 2005 as the on-site counseling initiative “Unnine” for victims of prostitution and was formally established as a non-profit organization the following year. Over the past two decades, it has carried out a wide range of activities to promote gender equality and protect women’s rights in the region.
The 20th anniversary event served as an opportunity to reflect on its achievements and explore future challenges, while reaffirming the importance of community solidarity in advancing women’s human rights.
