더불어민주당 전남·광주통합특별시장 후보인 민형배 국회의원(광주 광산구을)이 2026여수세계섬박람회 현장을 찾아 준비 상황 전반을 점검하며 성공 개최를 위한 보완 필요성을 강조했다.

민 후보는 22일 더불어민주당 주철현 의원(전남 여수시갑)과 함께 박람회 조직위원회가 위치한 국제관을 방문해 준비 상황을 보고받고, 사업 추진 현황과 시설 조성, 교통 및 안전 대책 등을 종합적으로 점검했다.
이날 점검에서 민 후보는 최근 박람회 준비 상황에 대한 국민적 관심이 높아지고 있는 점을 언급하며, 향후 과제로 ‘콘텐츠 경쟁력 강화’와 ‘현장 준비 완성도 제고’를 제시했다.

민 후보는 “여수세계섬박람회는 단순한 행사를 넘어 섬의 미래를 보여주는 국가적 플랫폼이 되어야 한다.”며 “전문가 참여를 확대해 콘텐츠를 보완·강화하고, 국제적 수준의 경쟁력을 확보해야 한다.”고 강조했다.
이어 주행사장 운영 방향과 교통·안전 대책 등 핵심 분야를 중심으로 준비 상황을 면밀히 살폈다.

민 후보는 부행사장으로 활용될 여수세계박람회장을 둘러본 뒤, 주행사장인 진모지구로 이동해 공정률과 배수시설, 관람객 편의시설 등 현장 전반의 준비 상황을 점검했다.
특히 간척지 기반 시설과 임시 구조물, 교통 및 재난 대응 체계 등 실제 운영 단계에서의 안전 확보 가능성을 중점적으로 확인했다.

현장 점검을 마친 민 후보는 “조직위원회의 설명과 현장 확인을 바탕으로 추가 점검과 보완 방안을 지속적으로 논의하겠다.”며 “기존 틀을 유지하되 부족한 부분을 보완해 성공 개최 조건을 만들어가는 것이 중요하다”고 밝혔다.

한편 중앙정부 차원의 지원도 본격화되고 있다.
이재명 대통령은 지난 14일 국무회의에서 여수세계섬박람회 준비 상황을 직접 점검하며 범정부 차원의 지원을 지시했으며, 김민석 국무총리 역시 지난 16일 현장을 방문해 공정과 교통 대책이 차질 없이 추진될 것을 당부했다.

2026여수세계섬박람회는 오는 9월 5일부터 11월 4일까지 2개월간 여수시 돌산읍 진모지구와 섬 지역 일원에서 ‘섬, 바다와 미래를 잇다’를 주제로 개최될 예정이다.

“The key to success starts now”… Min Hyung-bae inspects Yeosu World Island Expo preparations

Min Hyung-bae, a member of the National Assembly and candidate for the Jeonnam–Gwangju Integrated Metropolitan City (Gwangju Gwangsan-eul, Democratic Party of Korea), visited the site of the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo on the 22nd to inspect overall preparations and emphasize the need for improvements to ensure a successful event.
On this day, Min, accompanied by Rep. Joo Cheol-hyun (Yeosu-gap, Jeonnam), visited the International Pavilion, where the Expo Organizing Committee is located. He received a briefing on the preparation status and comprehensively reviewed project progress, facility construction, transportation plans, and safety measures.
During the inspection, Min noted the growing nationwide interest in the Expo preparations and identified “strengthening content competitiveness” and “enhancing on-site readiness” as key priorities moving forward.
“The Yeosu World Island Expo should go beyond a simple event and serve as a national platform showcasing the future of islands,” Min stated. “We must reinforce content through greater expert participation and secure competitiveness at an international level.”
He then closely examined key areas, including the operation plans for the main venue, as well as transportation and safety measures.
Min also toured the Yeosu Expo site, which will be used as a sub-venue, before moving to the main venue in the Jinmo District. There, he inspected overall preparation conditions, including construction progress, drainage systems, and visitor convenience facilities. In particular, he focused on verifying operational safety measures, including reclaimed land infrastructure, temporary structures, and transportation and disaster response systems.
After completing the site inspection, Min said, “Based on the explanations from the organizing committee and on-site verification, we will continue discussions on additional inspections and improvement measures.” He added, “Maintaining the existing framework while supplementing deficiencies will be key to ensuring a successful Expo.”
Meanwhile, support from the central government is also gaining momentum. President Lee Jae-myung reviewed the preparation status during a Cabinet meeting on the 14th and instructed government-wide support, while Prime Minister Kim Min-seok visited the site on the 16th and urged that construction progress and transportation measures proceed without disruption.
The 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo will be held for two months, from September 5 to November 4, in the Jinmo District of Dolsan-eup, Yeosu, and surrounding island areas under the theme “Connecting Islands, Seas, and the Future.”
